From Donald Sterling to China, racial discrimination has no place

Last week, NBA issued harsh punishment against Donald Sterling the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers team who had made racist remarks against Black team members. As Kevin Jia wrote in his commentary, the decision should sound an alarm to the discriminatory mentality shared by many Chinese people.

“Don’t bring Black people to my games,” were the remarks of Donald Sterling, billionaire and owner of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA basketball team.

Last week, an audio recording of Donald Sterling was leaked by the tabloid TMZ. The recording was a heated exchange between Sterling and his mistress where Sterling made racist remarks towards Black Americans. Sterling was banned by the league for life, and also fined $2.5 million.

Controversy was ensued after the NBA’s harsh decision. According to Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, the decision sets a dangerous precedence. Cuban claims that anyone who disagrees with league views, whether political, or social, could wind up ousted. Furthermore, many have stated that Sterling’s remarks were private, and that he has a right to Freedom of Speech.

But these people have missed the point.

As a society, we cannot allow the rich and elite to hold such ignorance towards minorities. It is unsettling that Sterling, a man who enjoys enormous political power, wealth, and social regard, could have such a despicable view on reality. Do we want our youth to admire a man who is intolerant towards minorities?

Racism and intolerance is not a matter of opinion but concerning basis of principles and societal standards. In fact, Sterling, who is Jewish and is also considered a minority, has failed to see his own hypocrisy. Jews were subject to horrifying racism and genocide from Nazi Germany; for Sterling to make these remarks is a great disservice to all those that have suffered and continue to suffer from prejudice and discrimination.
就我个人而言，虽然我出生在加拿大，并且深谙加拿大文化，但我是一名属于少数族裔的华裔，而我成长的环境让我了解族裔团结和非歧视的重要性。但是，史特林的言论仍然严肃地提醒大家，就消除种族歧视的职责而言，北美社会仍任重而道远。
Personally, I was born in Canada. I am considered a minority because of my Chinese heritage, even though I associate myself with Canadian culture. I grew up in a system that taught the importance of unity and non-discrimination. And yet, Sterling’s comments are a stern reminder of how far North American society still needs to come.

Perhaps most disappointingly, the Chinese community—in my experience-- has drawn little, if not any, criticism towards Sterling’s insensitive comments. Yet, this does not surprise me. The Sterling incident also sparked memories of my childhood travel to China when I was being told by relatives, ‘Black people are dangerous’ or ‘Indian people are dirty.’ I even remember my aunt telling that I should never have a relationship with a dark skinned girl.
我的许多亲戚发表对黑人和印度人的贬损言论让人不安，但是在一个种族歧视猖獗的国家里这些言论并非特例。据CNN报道，黑人和其他少数族裔在中国不断遭受歧视，中国计程车司机因为心存偏见而有意回避白人和黑人乘客已经是司空见惯的事情。
It is unnerving that I have many relatives that have made derogatory statements in regards to Blacks and Indians, and they are not alone in a country where racism still runs rampant. According to CNN, Blacks and other ethnic minorities in China are constantly discriminated against--it is commonplace in China to see taxi drivers purposely avoid White and Black customers because of their prejudiced ideals.
那些抱着种族歧视心态的人并没有认识到自己的观点的虚伪性和两面性。他们没有意识到在加拿大，华裔也是少数族裔。如果史特林的言论是针对加拿大华人，我确信华人会因此震怒。
Those that possess this racist mentality fail to recognize the hypocrisy in their views. They don’t realize that in Canada, Chinese people are minorities. If Sterling’s comments were against Chinese Canadians, I am certain that Chinese people would be enraged.
也许那些不断吹嘘中国经济很快就会超越美国的华人没有注意到中国的社会道德水准仍然远远落后于西方国家。在对物质需求的贪得无厌的追求中，种族偏见盛行，种族包容遭到忽视。但是如果中国想要赢得国际社会的尊重，其首先就必须学会如何尊重其他少数族裔。中国社会应该让种族歧视观点无立足之地。NBA对史特林的严厉处罚应该为那些抱有歧视心态的中国人敲响警钟。
While many Chinese people are constantly bragging that China will soon overtake the US economy, they fail to notice that China’s societal standards continue to lag far behind western countries. Racial tolerance has continued to be ignored as the country is gripped with insatiable material demands. But if China wants to earn the respect from the international community, it must first learn how to respect other racial minorities. The racist views should find no place in Chinese society. The NBA’s harsh punishment against Sterling should raise a red flag to the discriminatory mentality carried by those Chinese people.
