Does skin colour define who we are?

A traffic dispute can make you nervous. But you could get more jittery and anxious when you find out that the accident involves black people, under the misconception that black people are less likely to claim their responsibilities.

Pretty unluckily, I was recently struck by a car accident on my way home from a vacation trip in S.C.  A loud bang shocked me as I exited from a gridlocked highway. I quickly pulled over and stepped out of my car, only to find that the driver of the car that hit me was a black woman.

Despite feeling a sense of relief that she remained at scene, I prepared for a tough fight as I approached her, mind filled with questions: Would she admit what she did? Would she exchange information with me? Would she be willing to pay for any damages assessed?

You may easily understand where my worries came from. In a world where skin colour defines who we are, black people are often in the crosshair of racism. In North America, black people are racially discriminated against– from the general public, and police alike. Statistics show that blacks are disproportionally likely to be arrested, detained, or sentenced to prison in America –for any type of offenses.

The black community in Canada is also disproportionally more likely to be targeted by the police carding practices – where the police can randomly stop, question and document drivers. In 2012, numbers obtained by the Star showed that 24 per cent of those carded were black, who represent only 8.4 per cent of Toronto’s population, while forty-six per cent of those carded were white, who accounted for half of Toronto’s population.

In China, the class division in Chinese culture has taken the discriminations against blacks to the extreme and black people are the hardest hit by racism of all ethnic groups. They are openly deemed as the least intelligent and honest race. They are called “pigs”, “Black Ghosts”, and “Devils” in public. In media, Africa is portrayed as a wasteland, with an unimaginable number of people dying from diseases, wars and extremely high crime rates. Many people in China believe that being black automatically means you are poor, uneducated, stupid and dishonest.

To my surprise, the black woman in my car accident honestly provided me with everything I requested – her driver’s licence, insurance policy and the plate number of the car. Before I left, she sincerely asked me to contact her for whatever the problems I may encounter in claiming the damages.

Her behaviour left me embarrassed over my judgment on the black people. In the end, I am one of the Chinese descendants who had been exposed to the deep-seated culture that looks down upon the blacks.

Are people in other races more honest than blacks? Not necessarily. A few weeks ago, my car was accidently hit in the parking lot of my work premises in Toronto – where most car owners were Chinese, while I was inside the office working. It seems that the culprit of the accident decided to run away. Despite my efforts to track down the offender, no one has yet come forward to claim his or her responsibilities in the accident.
