Xiao, Jianhua, a Chinese billionaire who holds a Canadian passport has been detained by the Chinese authorities after being whisked away from Four Season Hotel in Hong Kong. The disappearance of Xiao, who appears to have incriminating evidence on Xi’s rivals, had occurred during a time of intense political struggle in China’s ruling Communist Party and when Trudeau government seeks warmer ties with China. But despite facing a risk of jeopardizing a relationship with China, a former Canadian PM and the Liberal government is trying to win the release of Xiao, sending a signal that the Canadian government does not condone the abduction of Chinese Canadians by their homeland authorities.
