Ontario government considers implementing foreign buyer tax to deter foreign investors

As the limited housing supply, instead of an influx of foreign investments, was considered the primary driver of Toronto’s overheated housing market, Ontario government previously objected to adopting B.C. style levy to control runaway prices. However, as widespread bidding wars kept engulfing the city and the aggressive growth of the market has continued to price out potential buyers, a dramatic move aimed at taming the demand and curbing foreign speculations is necessary. The Ontario government has backed down from its opposition to taxing foreign home buyers, saying it now considers using foreign buyer tax as an option to restrain Toronto’s hot housing market.
