Summary: Claiming to be a scientific expedition, China sent its Xuelong icebreaker on an voyage of exploration through Northwest Passage, a Canadian territory. But the icebreaker allegedly embarked on a mission to explore commercial, rather than scientific potentials over the passage – which provides a much shorter and safer route for large-scaled cargo shipments. Xuelong’s maiden trip has highlighted the desire of the world’s second largest economy to tap into the vast commercial interest provided by the new sea lane.
