Early this week, B.C. police made a shocking announcement that they’ve arrested 28-year-old Syrian refugee Ibrahim Ali, in connection with the death of 13-year-old Chinese girl Marisa Shen. Shen’s murder case has been the focus of media attention since her body was discovered in a Burnaby park last July, and the arrest of Ali, who arrived in B.C. in a wave of Syrian refugees that flooded Canada, came at a time when the Liberal government faces asylum seeker crisis. The news led to a torrent of negative comments in Chinese social media that put both Syrian refugees and Trudeau’s immigration policy in the crosshair.
“Mr. Trudeau, what do you say about Shen’s death? Her blood is in your hands.”
“Is Justin going to take responsibility for this one? What excuse will he use to avoid responsibility this time?”
The brutal death of a 13-year-old girl with Chinese background can inflict pain on us. It may impair our judgment at the heat of the moment, leading us to stigmatize an entire Syrian ethnic group for the alleged criminal act of one individual. However, perpetrators of young girls’ murder in Canada are not limited to the Syrian communities but exist in the white community and many ethnic groups. In 2003, 10-year-od Holy Jones was raped and murdered by a white man, 35-year-old software developer Michael Briere. In 2009, the 28-year-old Caucasian man Michael Rafferty was held responsible for 9-year-old "Tori" Stafford’s abduction, rape and murder.
However, the most shocking and high-profile case would be the death of 9-year-old Cecilia Zhang from the Chinese community, and the little girl’s murder saga still haunts many immigrants today. Zhang was abducted from her Toronto home and killed in Oct 2003, and her body was found near Credit River the next year. The killer was 20-year-old Chinese visa student Min Chen, a member of our community!
If we blame the entire Syrian community for Ali’s alleged criminal act, we could make the whole white population scapegoat for Safford and Jones murder, and the total Chinese community for Zhang’s killing! Blaming the entire race or group would make us appear not only ignorant but also plain silly!
Anger arises when innocent young girls die unjustifiably in the hands of troubled criminals. Scapegoating offers easy solutions and psychological comforting as we desperately seek answers. Driven by scapegoating mentality, tyrannical rulers throughout Chinese history resorted to nine familial exterminations to punish offenders, and many people lived a haunted life during the Cultural Revolution due to their degraded family background.
The excessive amount of scapegoating can fuel the deadly fire of resentment and lead to divisive and polarized society. The close-mindedly blame strikes a blow for many innocent hardworking Syrian community members who are struggling to establish a life in the adopted country.
There is already fear of being vilified for one man's alleged crime, according to CBC report. ”They're worried that, while they're trying their best to build a beautiful home for themselves here, this is a new challenge they may have to add to their plate of many challenges they are facing at the moment, " said Danny Ramadan, a Syrian refugee and an acclaimed novelist.
"This incident is an isolated incident," Syrian refugee Othman said of the allegations in an interview. " "It's unfortunate that there are sick and criminal people out there and these people can come from any community."
