Despite its safety, GM food rejected by China’s rich and educated

GM food, which is prevalent in Canada and America, faces overwhelming rejection from consumers in China -- particularly among those with a high level of education and a deep pocket, according to a nationwide consumer survey in China. The survey results show that the deeper the pocket and the higher the educational attainment of the consumers, the more likely they despise GMO.

The survey done in 2016 has found that 46.7% of respondents opposed GM foods while only 11.9% supported it. Among those who welcomed it, only 9.5% were from the educated, although the support rate is higher among those with a science degree (14.1%), rather than liberal arts background (7.5%). The rejection rate of GMO among those with an annual household over 1 million (RMB) reached as high as 51.6%, compared with 34.2 % with income below 80,000 RMB.

The repeated confirmation of GMO safety from the government and the scientific community can hardly turn the tide around, indicating that the Chinese government and scientists have little credibility among the country’s the brightest and the richest. China’s rich history of food safety scandals has eroded public confidence over the government, while the villain roles that scientific industry has played in the scandals have led consumers’ wary of technology in their grocery.

China suffered its biggest food safety crisis in 2008 when melamine was found in milk formula to increase protein appearance. The shocking scandal that poisoned 290,000 children and killed at least six infants have marked only the beginning of a slew of incidents – from fake eggs, diseased pork, gutter oil, contaminated toothpaste, mislabelled meat and much more.

However, public faith had plummeted to the lowest level when big pharma was involved in China’s vaccine scandal that recalls memories of food safety woes. China’s latest vaccine scandal is a textbook case of scientific fraud. The authority’s investigation has found that a total of 253,338 doses of vaccine rabies, and diphtheria and tetanus (DPT) made by Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology failed tests by state drug administration. The company had allegedly fabricated production and testing records, falsified production specifications and equipment. However, just a few months ago in November 2017, at least another 400,000 doses of the same vaccine produced by a different company -- Wuhan Institute of Biological Products were found to be substandard.

The vaccine scandals roughly coincided with the central government’s approval that allowed a group of scientists to research Bt rice—a GM crop that expresses a gene from the bacterium Bt to ward off pests. Undoubtedly, public skepticism over GM crop ensued after the government’s decision.

GMO food is safe. The most convincing evidence would be the research results from the prestigious National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. By comparing GMO food reactions between US where GMO foods are ubiquitous, and the United Kingdom, where GMO is unknown. Research has found that there is no significant difference in the occurrence of any diseases --from cancer to kidney disease to obesity and diabetes -- between the two countries.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, the rich and educated people in China still reject it. It is sad news, but it isn’t rocket science. In the face of abundant horrific news involving a failing government and disgraced scientists, the country's elite would treat any positive evidence supporting GMO foods, regardless of how strong they are, as straight up lies in their face.
