In the evening of April 25, 2020, a WeChat group (named “expanded group of university alumni association leaders”) engaged in a conversation concerning COVID 19 and its impact on a pre-arranged volleyball game between two association teams.  Suddenly, an unexpected post from Vincent Ke, a group member and an elected MPP for Don Valley North, appeared on the screen, which shocked the entire online chat room.

In a one-sentence question, the MPP texted, “Where have you been, babe?”, using a popular term of endearment “babe,” which takes the conation of intimacy and which often refers to a romantic partner.  Confusions and disbelieves ensued, with unspoken questions arising in the eyes of some group members that witnessed it firsthand. “Who was the babe to whom the MPP was referring? Does the MPP have a secret romantic partner?”

Mr. Ke’s post came in at approximately 10 pm on a Saturday, April 25, 2020, a perfect free time for leisure talks and fun activities.  As the conversations went further and deeper concerning how COVID 19 ruined a much desired sports game, Ke’s post disrupted the prevailing mood in the chat room and led the topic of the discussion quickly veered off the previous theme. Questions with emojis poured in, with some seeking an answer directly from the MPP.  “Did you mean me?” asked one of the members boldly, with a quick follow-up post: “Apparently not!”

Mr. Ke apologized immediately. “A typo, Very Sorry!” he texted, saying he made a mistake by sending the post. But as the group members quit the chat and started the next activity in their Saturday evening’s agenda, questions and concerns lingered, which prompted a screenshot of Ke’s post sent to Chinese News.

In an email sent to Mr. Ke on Monday, April 27, Chinese News sought a straight answer from the MPP over a question of whether he was involved in an extra-marital affair. The email pointed out that the tones of intimacy in his post raised suspicions that he might have kept a secret relationship that goes beyond a mistake of a typo.  Mr. Ke responded to the email later in the day, denying the suspicion outright by repeatedly saying the post was a mistake.

Mr. Ke said in an email responding to Chinese News inquires that he intended to send the question to a male friend. He said he meant to write “bye-bye (拜拜)” to his friend but when he typed the letters “bb,” through Chinese language platform pinyin, it offered him several choices, and he accidentally chose the wrong word babe (宝贝), instead of his intended one -- “bye-bye (拜拜).”

“And by another mistake, I sent it to the wrong group.”

“I am happily married,” Ke wrote continuously in the email. “I am deeply shocked that a typo message leads to this baseless assumption of a ‘secret relationship’ or ‘an extra-marital affair.’ I strongly oppose any interpretation of a (prevalent) pinyin input mistake.”

But given the public sensation his post has sparked – mistakenly or not, Mr. Ke, an MPP and a married man, shouldn’t feel shocked by the public reaction at all.
