Racism will come back and haunt those who fanned the flame of it

Crisis brings out the worst in human nature, leading to acts of racism and intolerance. But racisms take a variety of shapes and forms and can be carried out by different ethnicities under the circumstances. Some far-right groups from the Chinese community had been the culprits behind the Islamic phobia and racial attacks against Muslims. But the recent COVID 19 pandemic has sparked a different wave of discrimination that put ethnic Chinese in the crosshair. The recent attacks on Asians may sound alarm bells to the prejudiced, allowing them to see racisms and its implications through victim lenses.

Many newcomers from China, a country where anti-Muslim sentiment has continued to grow, hold deep-seated feelings of hatred and terror towards Muslims. On Chinese social media, derogatory name-calling on Muslims is the norm, and comments from Muslim supporters face backlash, criticism or sneering attacks. The flood of refugees from Muslim countries pouring into Canada under Trudeau’s immigration policy had fueled their anger and anxiety. Their resentment and fear towards Muslims reached a boiling point when a Syrian refugee was found responsible for the death of a 13-year-old Chinese girl from B.C.

In July 2017, Malissa Shen from B.C. was found dead, and one year later, a Syrian refugee was convicted of her murder. Some elements in the Chinese community believe that the case underscores the violent nature of the entire Muslim race. At a public memorial service in Toronto and Vancouver held for the murdered girl, signs attacking Trudeau’s immigration policy appeared beside the photo of the girl, highlighting the fear and anger toward the community deemed as the source of terrorism. In a separate incident whereby a hoax by a Muslim girl alleged that she has been assaulted by an Asian man, angry protestors went on streets with signs of “Hoax Today, Horror Tomorrow,” further revealing their discriminatory attitude against the Muslim community in Canada.

With COVID 19 pandemic engulfing Canada that has wreaked havoc on the lives of Canadians, coronavirus replaces terrorism to become the greatest fear of the time. Discriminatory actions and hate crimes in Canada have taken a different path, shifting its targets from Muslims to Asians. Growing ignorance and uninformed fears have triggered the human reaction of fanatically searching for those to blame, fueling their existing prejudice against a race deemed from an “inferior cultural background” and with a “disgusting eating habits”.

As a result, a growing number of Chinese Canadians face harassment and assault in the workplace or the name-calling on the street. Meanwhile, hate attacks against East Asians surged in Vancouver and the rest of Canada. According to Vancouver police, five out of 11 hate crimes reported in the city in March targeted East Asians, and three-quarters of all hate crimes reported this year aimed at the ethnic group. Toronto police also reported a notable increase recently of hate crimes with racially motivated slurs and comments hurled against Asians.

The root of racial discrimination and hate crimes lies in overt prejudice, hostility, or negative feelings towards a race or ethnic group. It comes from those ill-informed who attribute negative characters of few individuals to the entire group. Violence and assaults are the inevitable outcomes when prejudice and resentment are allowed to take root and spur into furious growth. Racisms and discrimination will go rampant and come back to haunt those who had backed it and even fanned its flame.
