Employers have been using this checklist to make sure their COVID-19 workplace safety plan contains key elements to help protect workers, customers and the general public. The following is an excerpt from this Safety Checklist (continued from previous listing):

5)Increase fresh air – Employers should maintain ventilation systems according to manufacturer’s instructions. They can adjust systems to increase the amount of fresh air and reduce recirculation; keeping windows and doors open as much as possible (weather permitting) and use outdoor spaces whenever possible.

6)Promote cleaning and disinfection – a good start will be to schedule cleaning/disinfecting of high-touch surfaces, common areas and shared items. To get maximum efficiency on this, it is best to specify products to be used for cleaning and disinfection and train workers on their safe use and disposal. Employers shall provide access to soap and water and alcohol-based hand sanitizer; require everyone to clean their hands before entering the workplace and require workers to clean their hands frequently and whenever needed.

7)Have a plan and communicate clearly - Post signage for workers and others about: physical distance (including decals, arrows etc.). Identify capacity limits for the facility; perform screening and self-assessment; wearing masks and hand hygiene. There are multiple ways to provide information to workers and customers, such as intercom announcements, social media and posters.

8)Maintain a COVID-19 workplace safety plan - Have a process for monitoring, keeping up with and sharing new provincial and local public health and workplace safety requirements for COVID-19. Employers have to develop a written safety plan (as required under the Reopening Ontario Act) and include how to address new risks introduced by new measures. Post the safety plan and make it available upon request as required; train workers on the measures and procedures in the plan; ensure supervision of the measures and procedures in the plan; monitor to ensure the instructions are being followed.

9)Collect information and report as required - Track information about close interactions at the workplace as may be requested by the local public health unit for contact tracing. Employers should be knowledgeable on how and when to report to the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.

These check items do not replace the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations and should not be used as or considered legal advice. Health and safety inspectors and employment standards officers apply the law based on the facts observed by them in the workplace.

Ontario.ca/COVID-19网站,以免自己疏忽了新政策而遇到麻烦。

Employers have a responsibility under the OHSA to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect a worker. Some businesses, including all those operating during a lockdown or shutdown, must have a written safety plan by law. There are no excuses for non-compliance to the safety requirements and stiff fines are given out by inspectors. Check www.Ontario.ca/COVID-19 regularly for updates.
