Opinion: My family's COVID crisis puts our pandemic fatigue under scrutiny

The misconception that the pandemic was over has increasingly gained traction among Canadians as the public health authorities lifted restrictions and abandoned protection measures. This mentality had found its way into my home, leaving my family of six putting their guard down after spending two years in a hyper-vigilant state. We threw most of the Covid household rules that kept us from the virus out of the window– including banning visits from guests, washing hands frequently, and donning masks in public spaces. As we moved on from the pandemic holding a reduced risk perception of catching the disease, coronavirus sneaked into our home. My 23-year-old daughter tested positive after a camping trip with her friends.
The widespread pandemic fatigue has driven political incentives to act like that Covid was something of the past. Tapping into the public sentiment, US president Biden declared that the pandemic was over, encouraging Americans to adopt more careless behaviors – from abandoning wearing masks in public to gathering regularly indoors without limits. Daily cases and death tolls disappeared from the public view as the pandemic no longer grabs the media headlines. But Covid lurks behind unjustified beliefs.
Despite cases and death counts in decline, the daily new infections remained at tens of thousands in the US, while on average, more than 400 people died every day. "This ended pandemic is still three times as bad as something we would ordinarily consider pretty bad," said Dr. William Hanage, associate professor of epidemiology, in response to Biden's remarks. In one week of Aug., when the perceived Covid risks were at the lowest level among Canadians, Canada recorded a death toll tripled the same week last summer. Dr. Hanage anticipated an uptick in Covid cases in the fall and the winter.
None of us responded to my daughter's covid diagnosis on high alert. Covid – the Omicron strain seemed not to pose severe health risks to us as its predecessor did. With enough hybrid immunity from infection and vaccination, the Covid threat would reduce to that of influenza, to which we had all fallen victim. We underestimated the severity of her illness, trying to go about our daily lives as usual after her diagnosis. The minimum level of isolation and protection we practiced soon led to the second family member catching the virus. The severe fatigue, bouts of sweat, and chills kept them bedridden as fear, gloom, and panic gripped the family. "At the worst moment, it felt much more painful than flu," my daughter said after getting better."I really wanted to die.”
Playing down the severity of Covid is another public myth that would cause devastating consequences. The view that Covid poses more threats than influenza in transmission and causing death is prevalent in the scientific community and has quickly drowned out those who believe otherwise. "The severity of one compared to the other is quite stark. And the potential to kill of one versus the other is really quite stark," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House's medical adviser. "We've never, ever in the history of the pandemic found that COVID-19 is equally risky to the flu," said Dr. Al-Aly, who has done research comparing COVID to the flu. "It's always carried a higher risk."
My family's Covid crisis has provided us with firsthand experience of the harms caused by the pandemic fatigue and misconceptions about the virus. But despite all the mistakes, some of us did something right. The booster shots the rest of the family received spared us from getting infected, ending the COVID rampage that could have caused more severe outcomes.
