Opinion (Chinese-English) I’m a Proud Canadian — That’s Why I’m Not Traveling With a U.S. Company This Summer

For years, summer meant one thing: packing our bags, heading south, and embracing the thrill of discovering another corner of America. I’ve visited numerous places, from Buffalo, New York, to the Grand Canyon in Arizona — sometimes by road, other times by air. I’ve stood mesmerized by the unpredictable eruptions of Yellowstone’s geysers and delighted in the sea lions twirling near the shores of Santa Barbara. I’ve escaped Toronto’s brutal winters by flying to my sister’s home in L.A. and felt the warmth of friends in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. was my go-to vacation destination — easy, familiar, and full of wonder.

But not this year.

In May, I began receiving a flood of phone calls from a U.S.-based cruise company offering enticing summer deals. I had never been on a cruise before, and the idea of setting sail with gourmet dining and sunset views was more than tempting. Yet every ring of the phone became a reminder of something deeper: my growing unease with the political climate south of the border.

Donald Trump’s tariff war and “51st-state” rhetoric have ignited a wave of patriotism in Canada—and I, like many others, feel compelled to act. This summer, I made a deliberate choice not to pour my leisure dollars into the U.S. economy. Instead, we picked a Canadian destination, joining a rising number of Canadians who are vacationing at home.

We are far from alone. According to Statistics Canada, nearly 800,000 fewer Canadians returned from the U.S. in May compared to the same time last year—a staggering 38-per-cent drop. Meanwhile, domestic travel is booming. Flight bookings within Canada are up, Airbnb searches have risen by 20 per cent, and recreational vehicle rentals have surged. In Tofino, B.C., hotel bookings began soaring as early as spring. Across the country, local tourism is getting a much-needed lift, even as global uncertainty drags on the broader economy.

What’s striking is that this movement isn’t just about economic trends—it’s about principle. For many of us, Trump’s combative stance toward Canada has turned a once-friendly travel habit into a political and personal dilemma. While I still value my American friends and memories, I can no longer ignore the broader context. Choosing to stay home feels like a quiet but meaningful act of resistance—and solidarity.

Like others, I’ve redirected my travel budget toward local pleasures: lakeside retreats, farmers’ markets, and small-town festivals. Dining out has become part of the experience, too. In June, restaurant reservations in Canada climbed 24 per cent compared to last year—far surpassing growth in the U.S. and globally.

This summer, travel for me is not just about where I go, but why.

Eventually, I told the cruise company sales manager to stop calling. “I won’t travel with a U.S. company this year, ma’am, because I’m a proud Canadian.” There was a pause on the other end of the line before she replied, “I got what you mean. I’ll make sure you won’t be called again.” And just like that, the calls stopped.

My message was clear — and so was her immediate understanding.
