Federal government to establish new model for funding Canadian journalism

A large chunk of ad revenues has been diverted to tech giants – such as Google and Facebook as advertisers increasingly choose digital platforms to reach their targeted audience. It has depleted the resources for traditional media that heavily invest in content, threatening the survival of journalism -- the cornerstone of a democratic society. 
Amid the growing disruption by the digital media and against the backdrop of the changing media landscape, the federal government released a report on Tuesday, highlighting its efforts to establish a sustainable model for funding the Canadian journalism. Its recommendations include the expansion of the Canada Periodical Fund, allowing more print media companies – including community newspapers to be eligible for the government’s support.
